Original painting «Still life with fish» by Luis Melendez (1716-1780).
At last I finished my new copy. This painting made according with traditional technologies of oil painting, using multilayer method.
Here are some photos of painting process.
Firstly I made a thin drawing with pencil.
Then covered canvas with transparent oil paint of warm brown hue. This layer named imprimatur. Sometimes it could be a colored ground, but I prefer to color a white ground.
When imprimatur layer dried, I blocked a surface with color, starting from background. On this step is very important to choose color tone and hue as close to original as it possible, because it’ll be a basic environment for the future picture.
Now I could proceed the objects. Mostly I focused on the form and color. I’ll return to close details later.
Secondary objects are also very important.
And at last, after surface dried, I can devote my time to detailing. Starting from the main objects: lemon, fish, front edge of the tabletop.
Some close up details
